Creating Cameos

by Maureen Williams

Making a cameo from a dingbat font to decorate your eggs is a very simple procedure.
Once you have mastered the basics the variation possibilities are endless.

I am using PSP 7.04 but these instructions should also work with other versions.
Your image will be much large than those shown here, as I have reduced
the image size to cut down on the download time.

Requirements:
Paint Shop Pro - download a free 30-day trial from Jasc Software
Fancy Hats font - download HERE.
Unzip the font and install into the Fonts Folder. Go to Control Panel, click on the Fonts folder and then select File, Install New Font and navigate to the location of the Fancy Hats font. Ensure the Copy Fonts to Font Folder is ticked. Select the font and click OK.

Optional:     Super Blade Pro, Ulead Art Texture or your favourite special effect.

Remember to save frequently!

 Step One

Open a new transparent image 350 x 500.
This will allow you to select the various areas easily
and the image will be resized when we are finished.

Step Two

In the Layer Palette, create a new layer and call it Frame.

Step Three

In the Styles Palette set the foreground to White and the Background to Null

Step Four

Make sure you are on the Frame layer and click on the Preset Shapes Tool.

Uncheck Retain style and change the line width to 10.
Turn on the Rulers - CTRL+ALT+R  (View, Rulers)

Step Five

Position the cursor at 50 left, 50 top
Check your position in the Status Line at the bottom of the screen on the left hand side.

Hints
Use the ruler to find the desired position.
When you are on an exact measurement you will notice the little line on the ruler turns white.

Step Six

Draw out the oval to 350 right and 450 bottom.

Step Seven

Select the Magic Wand and while still on the Frame layer
click on the white oval to select the border.

Go to Effects, Texture Effects, Sculpture and select the Gold preset. OK

CTRL+D to deselect the oval.

Step Eight

Remain on the Frame layer and using the Magic Wand
click inside the oval to select the inner area.
Click on Selections, Modify, Expand and enter 1 in the No of Pixels box. OK

Keep the oval selected and click on Layer 1 in the Layer Palette.
Change the foreground colour to a colour of your choice for background behind your cameo.
Flood Fill the oval with your chosen colour. I have used #FEF2BC.
CTRL+D to deselect the oval.

Step Nine

Create a new layer and call it Cameo.
Click on the Text Tool  and select the Fancy Hats font with the following settings:

Size 200 (type 200 in the font size box)
Stroke = null
Fill = black or colour of your choice
Floating checked

Step Ten

To position the image in the oval, move the cursor until you see the double-ended arrow pointer.
Hold down the left mouse button and move the image into position.
Resize as required for your purpose and then merge all layers.

Save your cameo or export as a picture tube for repeated use.

Variations

While this gives you a basic cameo there are a number of ways we can jazz up the image.
Note
To avoid an unwanted line around the highlighted areas be sure to
expand the selection before applying the chosen effect.

Variation 1

To add dimension to the flowers click on the Cameo layer and using the
Magic Wand click inside each petal and/or ribbon.
Click on Selections, Modify, Expand and enter 1 in the No of Pixels box. OK
Click on the background layer (Layer1) and apply a round inner bevel.

Variation 2

To change the colour of the flowers or other details of the image,
select the desired areas while on the Cameo layer.
Click on Selections, Modify, Expand and enter 1 in the No of Pixels box. OK
Create a new layer and while on this layer flood fill with the chosen colour.
Keep selected and apply a round inner bevel or other special effect of your choice.

Variation 3

For yet a different effect choose a dark background and a light colour for the image.
Experiment using white for the image colour in Step 9 the select the outline with the Magic Wand.
While still selected apply a Super Blade Pro preset or your favourite special effect.

Suggestions for Eggs

  • Use gold cord to replace the the frame around the oval.

  • Enlarge the completed image before printing multiple copies of the images. Shape each petal using a paper tole tool and glue over the individual flower petals for added dimension.

  • Cut a slice off the side of the egg, thus forming an oval. Glue the cameo oval onto a piece of cardboard and glue into the oval. Cover the oval with a plastic dome, trim with gold cord and braid.

  • Flip the cameo layer to create mirror image cameos for dual doors on an egg.

  • Use a larger font size so the image touches the edge of the border. Attach to the egg and use a flame drill to remove the shell represented by the background colour in the print. Trim with gold cold and braid around the oval.

I hope you enjoy experimenting with these delightful cameo figures. Be sure to share your results, either the cameos or an egg using a cameo, with the group. If you have any queries with this tutorial email me.
