CONE EFFECT

This is a quick and easy way to display a picture or tube. The chances are it will turn out different every time! Have fun and experiment with the settings for the filter, the texture used and also the mask. I think you will find this one quite addictive!

Requirements
Paint Shop Pro
- download a free 30-day trial here.
Filter - Dégradés  Dégradé cône simple
 - Unzip to where you have your filters.
Filter - Transparency > Eliminate Black

Optional Filters
Jeux de lignes > Entrelacement
Eye Candy 3.1 > Glow

Mask - mark_20  - Unzip to where you have your masks.
This mask was downloaded from the net a long time ago but I do not know who the owner is. If you know who it is please email me so I can give proper credit.
A tube of your choice.
A gradient of your choice.

Hint from Ronda - try a pattern fill for even more variations.

The tutorial has been done in V9 but could be done in earlier versions as well.

Remember to save frequently.

Step 1
Open a new transparent image 450 x 450
Flood fill with a gradient - colour isn't important, look for an interesting pattern.
Set the angle to 45.

HINT
When selecting a gradient choose one with lots of variations in the pattern
rather than a single light to dark gradient.
This can be achieved by adding a couple of repeats to the gradient.

Step 2
Apply a texture to the image - again this isn't critical - just experiment.
I used Effects > Texture Effects > Mosaic Glass.
Another interesting result is Effects > Reflection Effects > Kaleidoscope.

Step 3
Go to Effects > Plugins >  Dégradés >  Dégradé cône simple.
I've used the following settings but play with these to get a colour combination you like.
Note: this can also be changed using Adjust > Hue & Saturation.
The width of the colour panel will vary depending on the colour settings.
Adjust the Orientation slider so the pattern is located corner to corner.
Orientation = 139
Red = 24
Green = 84
Blue = 20

HINTS
When you are using the cone filter adjust the orientation so the
gradient colours are located at opposite corners.

Keep the colour settings down low so there is space between the colours (shown as black) otherwise you will get a "flat" appearance rather than the cone effect when you eliminate the black. This is what gives the transparency to the effect.

Step 4
Go to Effects > Plugins >  Transparency > Eliminate Black.

Duplicate this layer.

Step 5
Image > Rotate > Free Rotate
Check Right and 90 degrees.

Ensure All layers is unchecked.
In the Layer Palette right click and select Merge > Merge Visible.

Step 6
Image > Canvas Size - 650 x 650 with the image centred.

Duplicate layer.
Image > Rotate > Free Rotate
Check Right and 45 degrees.

HINT
If you have chosen a gradient which gives you two lots of different colours
 on the points like this

so that when you rotate 45 degrees to the right it looks like this

try rotating 135 degrees to the left and it will look more like this.

In the Layer Palette right click and select Merge > Merge Visible.
Rename "cone pattern".

Step 7
Add a new raster layer and drag or send to the bottom.
Flood fill with black or colour of your choice.

Step 8
Click on the pattern layer to make it active and add a new raster layer.
Flood fill with a contrast colour from your pattern layer.
Layers > Load/Save Mask > Load Mask from Disk
In Version 7 click on Masks > Load from Disk

Select the mark-20 mask or another one of your choice.

Step 9
In the Layer Palette right click on one of the layers in the mask group.
 Merge > Merge Group
Drag the merged mask layer below the cone pattern layer.

Version 7
 Mask > Delete
Answer Yes to merge with the current layer.

Step 10
Activate the mask layer.
Click on the Freehand Selection (Lasso) Tool.
Outline the point of the pattern.

Delete the mask area.

Step 11
In the Layer Palette turn off the background and pattern layer.
Activate the mask layer.
Selections > Select All.
Selections > Float.
Selections > De-float.
Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel.
Add your favourite inner bevel or use these settings.
Deselect.

Step 12
Images > Resize.
Reduce to 450.
Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen.

Step 13
Activate the cone pattern layer.
Add a new raster layer.
Add a tube of your choice.

Optional Step
Effects > Plugins > Eye Candy 3.1 > Glow
Width - 20 pixels
Opacity - 100%
Opacity Dropoff - Diffuse
Colour - white

Congratulations!
You are now finished.

VARIATIONS
Here are some other ideas you might like to try.

Entrelacement filter used on gold glitter pattern.
Line spacing (Espacement) = 20
Vert/Horzi = 0

Repeat Vert/Horzi = 255

then resume from step 3.

Effects > Reflection Effects > Kaleidoscope applied to gradient layer.
