Digital Painting

My Gallery

Below are examples of my digital painting, which have been achieved from following the basic tutorial how-to's from Al Dawson's original Digitoil 101 instructions. Al has given me permission to re-write the tutorial using my images and the tools in Paint Shop Pro Version 7.04.

The artwork used in the tutorial was originally created by Al Knight, who has also given me permission to use his artwork.

Experimentation with the basic PSP tools and effects will reveal many exciting results. Play with the settings to find out what works well for you. I am using a graphics tablet and the settings for intensity, hardness and density that I have listed may vary slightly when using a mouse.

Although I have had no formal art training I have had so much fun playing with this technique. I think you will too.

You will find the STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL to teach you the basic principals here.

This was my my first attempt at digital painting using Al Dawson's tutorial. Apart from a typo in the original instructions, which set me looking for a "Spry Brush" I've not made any changes.

I used Ulead Art Texture for the fine gold borders.
On the wider border I've used Simple Filters Four Way Average and then applied the PSP, Effects, Texture Effects, Fine Leather.

A second attempt at digital painting gave me a chance to try one of the artistic effects in PSP. As the colours looked more like a pencil sketch I applied the PSP Coloured Pencil Effect before framing. Super Blade Pro has been used on the gold borders and I've used the Texture Effects, Mosaic Glass on the wider border.

A challenge between myself and Glynis, another PSP addict, resulted in this sunset painting. The gold borders are SuperBlade Pro and for the wider border I played with the Kaleidoscope settings before applying Eye Candy 3.0 Jiggle with the Extreme Jitter setting.

Stormy Night
This was a digital representation was inspired by a painting I did many years ago. I used the Illumination Effects, Sunburst for the light from the lighthouse.
