FLYING SOUTH
by Maureen WilliamsUsing the out of frame
technique provides an interesting way to display images with an
"action" element in them. This technique creates the
illusion of the central image leaving the frame of the picture.

The same technique can
also be used with more static things like flowers where you want to
emphasise the main focus of the picture.

I am using Version 9 but this tutorial could be done in earlier versions as
well.
An image of your choice.
My zip file containing the cleaned image of the
birds and the background tile.
If you wish to use the image I
am using left click on the thumbnail
and then right click on the full size image and save it to your hard drive.

Remember to save frequently.
Step 1
Open the desire image, Shift + D to copy the image and then close the original image.
Right click on the Layer Palette
and promote the background to a raster layer.
If you are using a large image resize to around 500 on the longest
side.
Step 2
Make another copy of the image and minimize it for the time being.
Cut out the portion of the image you wish to extend
outside the frame
and save it in the psp format.
Refer to Lesson 5 for more information on
cleaning images. Alternatively you could use
a suitable tube for the out of frame highlight.
Step 3
Open the previously minimized image and promote to a raster
layer if necessary.
Image > Resize to 75%
Ensure Resize all layers is UNchecked.
Step 4
Use the Mover Tool to position the resized image to the top left
hand side.

Step 5
Open the background.gif and minimize the image.
This will allow access to the pattern through the Materials Palette.
Add a new raster layer and flood fill with the background pattern.
Drag the background pattern layer below the main image layer.
Step 6
Click on the image layer and using the Magic Wand click outside
the resized image.
Note: make sure the Magic Wand is set to Add or Replace in the
Mode box.
Selections > Invert will then select just the image.
Selections > Modify > Expand by 8 pixels. Do not deselect.
Create a new raster layer and flood fill with a
contrast colour from your image.
I have used the dark green for my frame - 0B3A17.
Drag this layer below the image layer.
Right click on the image layer and select Merge > Merge Down.
Step 7
Use the Magic Wand to select the border around the image.
Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel.
I have used the Angled preset in Version 9 and increased the
Shininess to 60.
Bevel - #1
Width - 8
Smoothness - 8
Depth - 8
Ambience - 0
Shininess - 60
Angle - 315
Intensity - 30
Elevation - 30

Step 8
Open the image of the ducks which you previously cleaned (or a
suitable tube).
Copy and Paste as a New Layer above the merged image layer.
Use the mover tool to align the ducks into position.
If necessary use the Deformation Tool to resize the ducks to the
same size
as on the underlying layer.
Step 9
Click on the merged image layer and select the Deformation Tool.

Hold down the CTRL button on the keyboard and push the bottom right
hand corner
of the image up and inwards. Now release the CTRL button.
You may also need to click on the centre of the deformation bounding box
and push the right hand side inwards.
Step 10
Note: If you are using a tube on a background image rather than
using part of the image to protrude from the frame you will
not have to clone the original background image.
You will notice the ducks are now protruding from the frame
below but you can
also see parts of the ducks on the main image layer.
Turn off the ducks layer and use the Clone Tool to remove these
unwanted portions of the ducks from the merged image layer.
Toggle between these layers until you are happy with the finished
result.
Note: if unsure how to clone images refer to
Lesson 9. Step 11
Click on the merged image layer and apply the following drop
shadow:
Vertical - 7
Horizontal - 10
Opacity - 34
Blur - 8.7
Colour - black Repeat the same drop shadow
on the ducks layer. You may wish to crop
portion of the right hand side of the background layer
but this is only personal preference and will depend on the image
you use. Step 12
In the Layer Palette Merge > Merge All.
Resize as required and save your file.

Variations
The
Vizros Plug-in is a free, fun addition to your special effects
library.
It provides a number of 3D page wrapping effects like this box.
By using the technique described above it is possible to have things
jumping out of the box!
