Variation by Cass
to the Gradient Patterns
by Maureen Williams

When Cass sent me the picture of what she had done using my Gradient Patterns mini tute it totally blew me away! The grace and beauty of the presentation was something I wanted to be able to share with others so I asked Cass if she would mind sharing what she did. As Cass has only been using PSP for about a month she wasn't confident about writing a tutorial but sent me a series of screen dumps of the settings she used.

You will need:
Paint Shop Pro - you can download a free 30-day trial HERE
I am using Version 9 but this tutorial could be done in earlier versions as well.
Note: The gradient effect shown below is not possible in versions before version 8
however the tute can still be done using version 7. See example at the bottom of the page

A gradient and tube of your choice.
If you wish to use the gradient & tube I'm using you can download my zip file.
I'm using the same images as the Gradients Patterns mini tute.

Installing Gradient Files
My MW-Iris.jgd file was created in PSP 7 but can also be used in Versions 8 & 9.
Unzip the file into the folder where your other gradients are located.
The arum lily is in .psp format so you can create your own tube.

As a starting point enter the settings below and see what effect it has on your gradients.
This was my basic gradient made up of 4 evenly spaced colours.

These are the settings I used.
Make sure "Link center and focal points" is unchecked.
Style = sunburst
Repeats = 1

Note: The ability to vary the focal point was only introduced in Version 8
so if you are using V7 your gradient result will not be the same as shown here.

Checking the Invert box will result in the colour at the far right of the gradient being located at the top of the pattern. Unchecked will use the gradient on the left hand end of the gradient.

The size of the starting image will result in a different appearance to the gradient as well.

Step 1
Open a new transparent image 300 x 400 and flood fill with the gradient.
Hint: If you prefer a certain colour in the centre of the gradient but would like the
opposite colour at the top use the Freehand Selection Tool (Lasso Tool in V7)
to select the triangle at the top and floodfill with the dark colour from the gradient

Step 2
Add a new raster layer for the tube.
If necessary use the Deformation Tool to rotate and resize the tube as required.
If using the arum lily image in the zip file sharpen the image twice.
Merge All.

 Step 3
Image > Add Borders > 5 pixels.
Use the Magic Wand to select the border.

Note: The colour isn't really important but use a colour that isn't in the gradient
if the Magic Wand picks up part of the gradient.

Effects > Reflection Effects > Kaleidoscope
use the following settings:
Horizontal & Vertical offset - 5
Number of petals - 10
Number of orbits - 3
Radial suction - 3
Edge Mode - Reflect
Rotation & Scale are both zero.

Do not deselect.

Note: if you prefer a plain, dark border choose black for the colour
and skip the Kaleidoscope effect.

Step 4
Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
use the following settings:
Vertical & Horizontal offset - 2
Opacity - 100
Blur - 1
Colour - black.

Repeat the drop shadow using -2 for the vertical & horizontal offsets.
Ctrl + D to Deselect.

Step 5
Image > Add Borders > 50 pixels, colour white.
Use the Magic Wand to select the border.

Effects > Reflection Effects > Pattern

Keep border selected.

Step 6
Effects > Texture Effects > Mosaic - Glass

Keep border selected.

Step 7
Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout

Repeat the Cutout effect changing the Vertical & Horizontal  settings to -2.

Deselect.

Step 8
Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tile

Note: The Seamless Tile effect is not available in V7 however you can
use the seamless tile in the Simple Filter for a similar result.

Step 9
Image > Add Borders > 20 pixels.
Use the Magic Wand to select the border.

Note: The colour isn't really important but use a colour that isn't in the gradient
if the Magic Wand picks up part of the gradient.

Effects > Reflection Effects > Kaleidoscope
use the following settings:
Horizontal & Vertical offset - 5
Number of petals - 10
Number of orbits - 3
Radial suction - 3
Edge Mode - Reflect

Do not deselect.

Step 10
Effects > Texture Effects > Fur

Use the following settings:
Blur - 93
Density - 100
Length - 79
Transparency - 45

Step 11
Effects > Texture Effects > Tiles

Keep selected.

Step 12
Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
use the following settings:
Vertical & Horizontal offset - 2
Opacity - 100
Blur - 1
Colour - black.

Repeat the drop shadow using -2 for the vertical & horizontal offsets.
Ctrl + D to Deselect.

Step 13
Image > Resize - 350 pixels wide or as required.

Experiment with the various settings and see all the variations that are possible.

Version 7 Result

A slightly different effect.
Experiment with other special effects for a different look.
In this one I used Effects > Reflection Effects > Rotating Mirror
on the initial gradient in Step 1 before applying the tube.

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. If you have any queries or find any instructions that need clarification in the tutorial don't hesitate to contact me.

Please help me keep this site up and running....
ANYTHING is appreciated, thank you so much!
