Lesson One
Cropping Images
by Maureen Williams

In this lesson we will be working with the Selection Tool.

When you edit an image using the Selection Tool you are isolating a portion of the image to edit or modify, rather than changing the entire image. The selected area is a temporary isolated portion of the whole image, which you can copy, move, paint or apply a special effect to.

A selection can be identified by a border of black & white dashes around the edge, which is known as a marquee. You will also hear it referred to as “marching ants”.

Requirements:
Paint Shop Pro -
download a free 30-day trial from Jasc Software
(I am using PSP 7.04 but these instructions should also work with other versions)
An image of your choice or use the one provided.

Egger Hot Tip

This procedure is used to remove the excess area around the desired portion of an image. It can be used to cut away unwanted wording from a scanned image of a card or wrapping paper or to resize an image to fit inside a diorama

Step One

Open Paint Shop Pro and from the Menu bar select File/Open.
Navigate to where you have stored your image.

If you would like to use this image of my dog, Shad, left click on the image to get a larger image
and then Right Click and select Save Image As to save it to your hard drive
Alternatively, you can Copy and Paste the image into PSP

Step Two

From the Menu bar select Window/Duplicate (keyboard shortcut - SHIFT+D)
to create a copy of the image. You will now have a copy of your original picture named Image1

Close the original image.

Note: Get into the habit of creating a copy of your image BEFORE you start doing any alterations in case you want to re-use the image or scrap what you have done and start again.

Step Three

Check your image to determine which portion of the image you want to retain.
Click on the Selection Tool icon in the Tool Palette on the left hand side of your screen.

Use the following settings:
Selection Type: Rectangle
Feather: 0
Antialias unchecked.

Step Four

Move your cursor over the image
You will notice the pointer changes to a cross hair with a dot in the centre.

(The cursor appearance can be changed by clicking on the second tab in the Tool Options box)

You are now ready to select the portion of the image you wish to keep as your final image.
Position the cursor at the top left hand corner of where you want your new image to start.

Left click and holding the mouse button down, move the cursor to the bottom right hand corner where you want your new image to finish. Now release the mouse button.

You should now see the marque (“marching ants”) around your selected portion of the image.

If you aren’t happy with the selection just right click INSIDE the selected area to deselect.
(Alternatively, you can left click OUTSIDE the selected area to achieve the same result.)

Repeat your selection until you are happy with the result.

Step Five

Click on Image/Crop to Selection to remove the unwanted portion of your image.

Step Six

To resize an image click on Image/Resize.
For these lessons we will be using Pixel Size of 350 pixels on the longest side.
Ensure “Maintain Aspect Ratio of” box is checked.
Click OK.

Step Seven

Click on File/Save As
Navigate to where you want to save your file.
In the File Name box enter an appropriate name for your file.
In the Save As Type box select JPEG format.
Click on the Options box at the bottom of the box.

In the Save Options box select the Run Optimizer option.
In the "Set Compression Factor to" box select the desired amount.
As a guide,  for images to share on the Internet select a compression between 20 - 30.
This will produce a smaller file size without compromising the image quality.

Revision Plan

Explore the PSP Workspace. Click on the Context Help (the arrow with the question mark on it)
for more information on each item.

Choose an image of your own and experiment with different selection options.
Crop the image and save it to your hard drive.
When you have saved your image, send it to the group so we can share your progress.

Don't be afraid to experiment with the program. Try as many tutorials as you can.

If you have any questions about this tutorial send a message to the group for an answer.
