Lesson Two
Adding a Border
by Maureen Williams

In this lesson we will be working with the  Eye Dropper Tool.

The Eye Dropper tool is used to select a specific colour and place it in the active foreground or background colour palette.

An image has two active colours - the foreground colour on the left hand side at the top of the Colour Palette and the background situated on the right hand side.

Painting or drawing while pressing the left mouse button will apply the foreground colour. Press the right mouse button to apply the background colour.

Requirements:
Paint Shop Pro -
download a free 30-day trial from Jasc Software
(I am using PSP 7.04 but these instructions should also work with other versions)
An image of your choice or use the one provided.

Egger Hot Tip

The Eye Dropper is a quick way to select a colour from an image or the Colour Palette and is a very useful technique for colouring black and white clipart images.

Step One

Open Paint Shop Pro and from the Menu bar select File/Open.
Navigate to where you have stored your image.

If you would like to use this image Right Click and select Save Image As to save it to your hard drive
Alternatively, you can Copy and Paste the image into PSP

Step Two

From the Menu bar select Window/Duplicate (keyboard shortcut - SHIFT+D)
to create a copy of the image. You will now have a copy of your original picture named Image1

Close the original image.

Note: Get into the habit of creating a copy of your image BEFORE you start doing any alterations in case you want to re-use the image or scrap what you have done and start again.

Remember to save frequently!

Step Three

Select the Eye Dropper Tool from the tool bar. The pointer will change to an eye dropper as the cursor moves over the image. You will notice the colour change in the box at the bottom of the Colour Palette to indicate what the active colour and the relevant RGB values will be if selected.

Choose a colour from your image and left click to make it the active foreground colour.
Right click on the background colour box to view the most recently used colours and select white.

Note: You can also select a different colour by clicking on either the foreground or background colour boxes. This will open the colour wheel to allow you to choose a colour.
The foreground and background colours can be switched by clicking on the double-ended arrow situated between the two colour boxes.

Step Four

Select Image/Borders with the following settings
Ensure Symmetric is checked.
Click OK

Note: the border colour will always be the active background colour

Step Five

Click on the double-ended arrow to change the active foreground and background colours.

Your chosen colour should now be the background colour.

Select Image/Borders
Size = 20
Click OK

Step Six

To resize an image click on Image/Resize.
For these lessons we will be using Pixel Size of 350 pixels on the longest side.
Ensure “Maintain Aspect Ratio of” is checked.
Click OK.
After resizing you should always select Effects/Sharpen/Sharpen to restore
 the crispness to the image.

Step Seven

Select Effects/3D Effects/Buttonise using these settings.

Step Eight

Click on File/Save As
Navigate to where you want to save your file.
In the File Name box enter an appropriate name for your file.
In the Save As Type box select JPEG format.
Click on the Options box at the bottom of the box.

In the Save Options box select the Run Optimizer option.
In the "Set Compression Factor to" box select the desired amount.
As a guide,  for images to share on the Internet select a compression between 20 - 30.
This will produce a smaller file size without compromising the image quality.

Revision Plan

Choose an image of your own and experiment with different selection options.
Crop the image if necessary using the instructions from Lesson One.
Add a border to your image using the above instructions.
Resize to 350 pixels on the longest side and save to your hard drive.

When you have saved your image, send it to the group so we can share your progress.
Don't be afraid to experiment with the program. Try as many tutorials as you can.
If you have any questions about this tutorial send a message to the group for an answer.
