Lesson Three

Colouring Line Art

In this lesson we will be working with the Flood Fill Tool and the Magic Wand

The Flood Fill tool fills an area with a colour, pattern, or gradient.
It has a number of options that control how it recognizes and replaces colour.

The Magic Wand is another one of the selection tools - Selection, Magic Wand & Lasso Tools.
Unlike the other two selection tools, the Magic Wand tool works by selecting
 content rather than defining edges.

For further information on these tools check the Context Help.

Requirements:
Paint Shop Pro
- download a free 30-day trial from Jasc Software
(I am using PSP 7.04 but these instructions should also work with other versions)
An image of your choice or use the one provided.

Optional: Lesson 3 Homework zip
You will need Winzip or other unzipping program to unzip the file.

Egger Hot Tip

Rubber stamp catalogues, stained glass pattern books, children's colouring books and dingbat fonts are good places to look for line art images.

See an example of my Iris Egg clipart at the end of this lesson.

Step One

Open Paint Shop Pro and from the Menu bar select File/Open.
Navigate to where you have stored your image.

If you would like to use this image Right Click and select Save Image As to save it to your hard drive
Alternatively, you can Copy and Paste the image into PSP

Step Two

From the Menu bar select Window/Duplicate (keyboard shortcut - SHIFT+D)
to create a copy of the image. You will now have a copy of your original picture named Image1

Close the original image.

Note: Get into the habit of creating a copy of your image BEFORE you start doing any alterations in case you want to re-use the image or scrap what you have done and start again.

Remember to save frequently!

Step Three

When working with clip art or black & white images you will need to check the size as some .wmf & .gif files are quite large. If necessary, resize your image using Image/Resize.

You will also need to check the image is 16-million as some functions in PSP will not work on an image that hasn’t been increased to 16-million colours.

To increase the colour depth select Colours/Increase Colour Depth/16-Million Colours.
If this option isn’t available your image is already set at the increased colour depth.

Step Four

Use the Colour Palette to select your desired background and foreground colours.

Step Five

To activate the Magic Wand click on icon in the Tool Palette.
Use the following settings:
Match Mode: RGB Value
Tolerance: 30
Feather: 0
Sample Merged: Unchecked

Note: Depending on the image you are using, it may be necessary to use a higher or lower tolerance setting to select the entire area you wish to select without missing any stray pixels.

Step Six

Using the Magic Wand click inside an area you wish to colour.
To select more than one area at a time hold down the SHIFT key while making your selections

Step Seven

To avoid having a white line around the edge of your image when you flood-fill, we need to expand the
selected area by one pixel. To do this click on Selections, Modify, Expand, by 1 pixel.
You will notice the "marching ants" have moved closer to the black outline.

Step Eight

In the Styles Palette select whether you want to use solid colour, gradient or pattern fill.

Step Nine

Click on the Flood Fill Tool to activate it and then click in one of the selected areas to apply your fill.

Step Ten

Repeat Steps Six to Eight for the remaining areas in your image.
Click anywhere outside the butterfly to select the outer area and apply your chosen fill.

Step Eleven

As shown in the Lesson Two when you add a border to your image it uses the selected background colour.

I have added a 5 pixel border in using the dark purple from the body of the butterfly.

When you try to add a border to an image with layers you will get a warning box pop up advising the function can only be performed on a single layer - just answer Yes to this question.

Step Twelve

To add a different colour or texture to your border you need to add a border using the background colour and then select the border area using the Magic Wand.
I have used white as my background colour and select a border width of 20 pixels.

Step Thirteen

Flood fill the border area with your chosen fill.
I have used a Sunburst gradient

Step Fourteen

Keep the border selected and buttonize the frame.
Effects/3D Effects/Buttonize
Use the settings from Lesson Two or experiment with your own settings.

Step Fifteen

Congratulations!
Now save your new image in Jpeg format onto your class disk.

Homework

Part One

Create a new Folder on your Hard Drive and call it PSP Program Folders.
Double click on the Program Folders to open.
Create a new folder called Patterns.
Copy the fur_brown.bmp and fur_white2.bmp files in the Lesson 3 Homework zip file
into the Patterns Folder in your PSP Program Folder.
These patterns will now be available when you select Patterns in the Style Palette.

Create a new folder called Gradients in your PSP Program Folders.
Copy the MW-Rainbow.jdg file into the Gradients Folder
This gradient will now be available when you select Gradients in the Style Palette.

So that PSP knows where to locate these new folders we need to add a path in the Preferences.

Select File/Preferences/File Locations.
Click on the Patterns tab at the top.
You will notice the Jasc program file is listed in the top box.

Click on the Browse button beside the second box and navigate to where
you have created your Program Folders folder.
Repeat this procedure to set up your Gradients Folder.

Part Two

Select one of the B/W images from the Lesson 3 Homework zip file.
Colour and frame the image using what you have learnt so far.

Note: You may need to join any broken lines in the image to ensure the area selected is complete.
To do this use the Zoom Tool to increase the size of the image.
Set the foreground colour to black and select the Paint Brush with a brush size of 1 pixel.
Join up any breaks in the image.

When you have saved your image, send it to the group so we can share your progress.
Don't be afraid to experiment with the program. Try as many tutorials as you can.
If you have any questions about this tutorial send a message to the group for an answer.

Another Example

Below is the black & white clipart image I used for my Iris Egg design on the Modifying Clipart video.

I used a gradient fill for both the petals and the leaf blades.
The blue areas in the oval represent the eggshell to be cut out.

By selecting the individual petals I was able to enlarge each one before flood-filling with the gradient. I then placed the individual petals on separate layers so I could print a number of copies of each petal for the paper tole portion of the egg. Increasing the size of the petals and eliminating the black outline, meant the shaped petals covered the original printout in the final design.
