Lesson Four

Removing Colour

In this lesson we will be working with the
Freehand Tool (also known as the Lasso)
 and the Zoom Tool

We will also be introducing Layers and the Inner Bevel effect.

The Lasso Tool allows you to draw freehand selections anywhere on the current image.
There are three types of selections available using the Lasso:
 Freehand, Point-to-Point or Smart Edge.

With the Zoom tool you can get a close-up view for detail work.

For further information on these tools check the Context Help.

Requirements:
Paint Shop Pro
- download a free 30-day trial from Jasc Software
(I am using PSP 7.04 but these instructions should also work with other versions)
An image of your choice or use the one provided.

Remember to save frequently!

Egger Hot Tip

Mastering the Lasso Tool is very important as it will be used extensively to isolate and clean up a specific area of an image.

You will notice this technique is sometimes used in TV advertisements to highlight a particular portion of the image.

Step One

Open Paint Shop Pro and from the Menu bar select File/Open.
Navigate to where you have stored your image.

If you would like to use this image Right Click and select Save Image As to save it to your hard drive
Alternatively, you can Copy and Paste the image into PSP

lesson 4-01

Step Two

From the Menu bar select Window/Duplicate (keyboard shortcut - SHIFT+D)  to create a
copy of the image. You will now have a copy of your original picture named Image1

Keep the original image open as well.

Step Three

We now need to convert the duplicated image (Image1) to greyscale.
Click on Colours, Greyscale.

Step Four

This step is most important!
Increase the Colour Depth of the Image1.

To do this Click on Colour, Increase Colour Depth, 16 Million Colours.

lesson 4-02

Step Five]

Click on the original image to make it the active image.
Click on Edit, Copy (shortcut - CTRL+C)

Step Six

Click on Image1 to make it the active image.
Click on Edit, Paste as New Layer (shortcut CTRL+L)
If the Layer Palette isn't visible you can toggle it on and off using the Toggle Layer Palette icon.

lesson 4-03a

You should now have 2 layers in your Layer Palette for Image1
A black & white image as your background layer
and a colour image as Layer1.

lesson 4-03

Note: If you only see a black and white image you forgot to Increase the Colour Depth in Step 4.

You can now close the original image.

Step Seven

Click on the Zoom tool Zoom Tool on the Toolbar on the left of your screen.
Zoom in on Image1 to see as much detail as you need to work with.

Step Eight

Click on the Lasso Tool Lasso Tool to activate it.
In the Tool Options window select the following options:
Selection Type - Point to Point
Feather - 0
Antialias - Unchecked

Click on the second tab at the top of the Tool Options window and check
Use precise cursors
Show brush outlines
Note: these two options are personal preference but are what I choose to use.

Step Nine

Position the cursor on the edge of the pink bear and LEFT click.
Now move the cursor a bit further along the outline of the bear and left click again.
For a more precise selection keep the distance between the left clicks short.
Continue around the top portion of the bear until you get back to where you started.
To close off this selection RIGHT click. You will notice the "marching ants" around the outline.

If you make a mistake while outlining your selection you can
click on the DELETE  key to undo the last line you made.

To select another area hold down the SHIFT key and position the cursor on the outline of the legs.
Repeat the above procedure to add the legs to your selection.

Note: An alternative way to select additional areas is to add extra layers in Step 6
and then select each extra area on one of the other layers.

You should now have the "marching ants" around both the pink areas of the bear.

Step Ten

Click on Selections, Invert and the hit Delete.
This will remove the coloured background outside the pink area, leaving the pink bear highlighted.

Step Eleven

Use the   Eye Dropper to select a pink shade from the bear.
Set it to your background colour.

Add a border around your picture using the technique you learnt in Lesson 2.
Go to Image, Add Border and select a pixel size of 20.

Don't forget:
When you try to add a border to an image with layers you will get a warning box pop up advising
the function can only be performed on a single layer - just answer Yes to this question.

Step Twelve

Activate the Magic Wand and then click on the border to select it.
Go to Effects, 3D Effects, Inner Bevel

Step Thirteen

Choose the Pillow Preset with the Default settings.

Step Fourteen

Congratulations!
Now save your new image in Jpeg format into your lesson folder and share with the group.

If necessary, resize to 350 pixels on the longest side before saving.

Revision Plan

Select an image of your choice and use the above technique to highlight a portion.
Experiment with the techniques you have learnt so far.
Select different presets in the Inner Bevel area to see what effects they have on the border.

If you have any questions regarding the lessons, check the PSP Lessons FAQ page. If you don't find the answer there, email the group with your question in case others are having the same problem.
