Lesson 9
Using the Clone Tool

by Maureen Williams

In this lesson we will be using the Clone Tool
and also the Push and Smudge options from the  Retouch Tool.
For information on other tools, refer to the instructions in the earlier lessons..

Requirements:
Paint Shop Pro - download a free 30-day trial from Jasc Software
(I am using PSP 7.04 but these instructions should also work with other versions)

A selection of images of your choice or you may use these photos taken by my sister, Lorna Winch.

Click on the images for a larger view and then right click and save the image to your hard drive.

Remember to save frequently!

Egger Hot Tip

The Clone Tool can be used to create a collage by copying parts of other images into the original image.

Alternatively, you can change part of an image by using detail from another location in the same image. See my tutorial "Preparing Images for Paper Tole"  for further details on this technique.

Both of these techniques using the Clone Tool are very handy for creating your own backgrounds for dioramas in egg artistry.

 Step One

Open PSP and locate and open the images you wish to work with for this lesson.
Choose images of a similar size, keeping in mind the perspective of the images in the foreground, middle and background.
Resize your images if necessary. For this exercise I resized the frog by 75%.

Step Two

Open both images side by side on your work space.
Click on the Target image (the one you want for your finished image) to make it active.
In the Layer Palette create a new layer.

Step Three

Click on the Clone Tool and position the cursor on the Copy image where you want to start copying from.
Hold down the Shift key and click the left mouse button.
You will notice a circle appear on your image (I've outlined it in red on the frog's leg)

Step Four

Click on the Target image to make it active and make sure you are on the new layer.
Position the cursor on the target image where you want to place your new detail.
Hold down the Left mouse button and move the cursor.
As you move the cursor you will notice the copy image is transferred onto the target image.

Step Five

Continue moving the cursor until you have transferred all the detail you wish to add to the target image.

If necessary use the Eraser, the Push Brush or the Smudge Tool to clean up the edges and blend the copied image into the target image. Once you are happy with your new image Merge Visible in the Layer Palette and then save your new graphic.

I hope you have been able to follow this short how-to tutorial - experiment with combinations of different images and see what you can come up with. If you have any problems understanding the tutorials email me.
