Checking Outlook Express Send Options
by Sunni

In this lesson, we try to make it easy to check your Microsoft Outlook Express for Windows has the right settings for sending graphics and attachments. One of the membership was unable to upload graphic attachments to her email and kept receiving an alert with "Application/octet-stream" in it.

Ok - so what the heck IS that anyway? After a search on the web, the following links lead me to an answer. This tutorial is a result of those findings.
Handling application-octet-stream
RFC 1521 - 7.4.1. The Application-Octet-Stream (primary) subtype

The graphic to the right is a snapshot of my Outlook Express version 5. The following steps should be found in roughly the same place in all versions of Outlook Express.

In Outlook Express, mouse up to the top menu bar and click on Tools, then scroll down and click on Options...

This will pop up the Options window. Wander around and make selections so Outlook is tweaked the way you want it. But - under the Send tab, show circled at the right, you want to pay particular interest to the Mail Sending Format section I've also circled.

Click on the radio button of your choice. I prefer to send in plain text, you can choose HTML if you like adding embedded graphics, stationery and active links. Next you'll see two buttons I've pointed out. HTML and Plain Text Settings... You will need to check both of these.

When you click on HTML Settings... the pop up window shown on the right appears. Make sure your settings match the ones displayed here. When you click on the little arrow at the end of the "Encode text using:" field, you will get three choices: None, Quoted Printable and Base 64. You want Quoted Printable. You also want both check boxes below to have checkmarks in them. Click OK.

When you click on Plain Text Settings...  the pop up window shown on the right appears. Make sure your settings match the ones displayed here. When you click on the little arrow at the end of the "Encode text using:" field, you will get three choices: None, Quoted Printable and Base 64. You want None. Make sure there is NO checkmark in the Allow 8-bit characters in headers. Below, you can use any setting you prefer for Automatically wrap and Indent. Click OK.

When you have finished with those two buttons, the Apply button at the bottom of the screen will turn dark. Click on that and then click on OK. You should now, hopefully, be able to attach graphics to your email without receiving the
"Application/octet-stream" anywhere.
