Oval Gift Box
by Maureen Williams

Inspiration for this tutorial came from an image sent in by Lucille Schacht, a member of the EggersPSP group, who sent through an oval box she had made up using the Vizros filter. She suggested I might be able to write up a tutorial for those wanting to try the cylinder preset. Thanks Lucille!

I have tried to make these instructions detailed enough for beginners to follow as well
and therefore more advanced users may not need to follow all steps shown.

You will need:
Paint Shop Pro - you can download a free 30-day trial HERE
I am using Version 9 but this tutorial could be done in earlier versions as well.

Vizros filter - download this free 3D plugin here.

An image of your choice.

If you wish to use the image I am using left click on the thumbnail
and then right click on the full size image and save it to your hard drive.

Remember to save frequently.

Step 1
Open the desired image, Shift + D to copy the image and then close the original image.
If necessary resize your image  to around 350 on the longest side.
Use the Eye Dropper to sample a light and dark colour from the image and
set them as your foreground and background colours.

Step 2
Open a new transparent image 500 x 375 and flood fill with the foreground colour.
Shift D to duplicate the window.

Step 3
Effects > Plugins > Vizros 4 > Cylinder

I have used the following settings but adjust the various sliders until you
are happy with what you are seeing.

Click on the thumbnail for a larger image.

Set the Opaque slider to zero on the Background page
to ensure you get a transparent background.

Use the Mover Tool to move the box down the page a bit.

Step 4

Open the second copy of the flood filled image from Step 2.
Effects > Plugins > Vizros 4 > Cylinder

In the Page Properties area set the Side Page to Solid and select the back colour

Use the same settings as before but reduce the height of the side
by changing the Z dimensions to 50.

Copy  (CTRL + C) and Paste the as New Layer (CTRL + L)
on your original oval box image.
Minimize the lid image.

Use the Deformation Tool to position the lid over the box.
Use the side handle to drag the lid out to the size of the box.

Step 5
Use the Mouse to select the top of the lid.
Do not deselect.

Step 6
Open your original flower image from Step 1.
CTRL + C to copy.
Go back to your box image and Paste into the Selection.
(CTRL + SHIFT + L)

Zoom in to about 200% for a clearer view of the top of the lid.
Use the Soften Tool set to 3 to smooth the jaggies around the edge of the lid.

Apply a light drop shadow to the lid layer to define the lid
using the following settings:
Vertical Offset - 2
Horizontal Offset - 2
Opacity - 35
Blur - 2

When you have completed your oval gift box to your satisifaction
Merge > Visible to link the layers.
Apply a short perspective shadow to complete the image.
I have used the Eye Candy 4000 Shadowlab plugin for my shadow.

Resize as desired and save.

VARIATIONS

Use a gradient fill for the side page.

Perspex cylinder using a clear gradient fill.

When using a gradient of pattern fill with the Vizros filter is it necessary
to select more repeats for a gradient or a smaller percentage for a pattern
as the filter tends to stretch the end result.

These two gradient boxes were done by Carol Green using a
 foreground-background gradient with 11 repeats.

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. If you have any queries or find any instructions that need clarification in the tutorial don't hesitate to contact me.
