Preset Kaleido Frame
by Maureen Williams

This is a very versatile tutorial with many design variations possible.

It  was inspired by a tutorial called Ovalkaleid Frame written by Julie Dimmick
Julie has some great tutorials and gave me permission to share this link with you.

I have written the tutorial using PSP 7.04 and included Version 6 variations in red.

You will need:
Paint Shop Pro - you can download a free 30-day trial HERE
An image with a central area of focus.

If you wish to use the image and preset shape I am using I've included them in the zip file.
Unzip the preset shape file into your Shapes folder in PSP.

Remember to save often - you don't want to lose your stunning art work!

Now, let's get started.

Step 1
Open your image in PSP. SHIFT+D to duplicate the image and close the original.
Right click on the background layer and click on Promote to Layer.

V8 - Promote Background Layer

Step 2
Use the Eye Dropper to select a foreground colour from picture.
I have used #C8B583.
Set the Background to "null".

Step 3
Select a suitable preset shape, depending on the focus of the picture,
Retain Style unchecked, Antialias & Vector checked and a line width 10.
(For Version 6 use Stroked in the Control Box )

Draw a frame around the central area, leaving a reasonable border around the edge.

Hint: turn the Grid on and set the grid size to 50.
View > Grid

If necessary, click on the nodes to adjust or centralise the frame.
When happy with the placement, right click on the Vector layer and convert to raster.
Rename  the layer - frame.

Turn off the grid.

Step 4
Select the frame with the Magic Wand.
Add a Round Inner Bevel (Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel) or one of your choice.
  Deselect.

Step 5
Still on the frame layer, use the Magic Wand to select the inside of the frame
Selections, Modify, Expand by 1.

Go to Effects, 3D Effects, Cut-Out using the following settings:
Vertical & Horizontal, -1; Opacity, 100; Blur, 11.3
(Version 6 cut-out go to Images/Effects/Cutout)
Repeat the Cut-Out changing the Vertical & Horizontal to 1
Deselect.

Step 6
Click outside the frame to select this area.
Selections, Modify, Expand by 1 and apply the same cut-out.
Keep selected.

Step 7
Make sure you are still on the Frame layer

and go to Effects/Reflection Effects/Kaleidoscope
using the following settings as a guide - Horizontal = 79,
Vertical = 100, Scale = -3,  Number of Petals = 8
Note: Play with these settings until you have something pleasing to the eye
depending on the preset shape you have chosen .)
(Version 6 Kaleidoscope go to Images/Effects/Kaleidoscope)

Keep selected.

Step 8
Click on the Image layer and apply a texture of your choice.
I have used Effects, Texture Effects,  Mosaic - Glass
Try Straw-wall, Fine Leather, Mosaic - Antique, Swirls to name a few.
If you have Eye Candy 3.1 try the Jiggle setting with the Extreme Jitter preset.

Keep Selected.

Step 9
Click back on the Frame layer and apply the Kaleidoscope
effect again using the same settings.

Deselect.

Step 10
Swap the foreground colour you used for the Preset shape to Background
Image, Add Border and add a narrow border.
Select the border with the magic Wand and add an Inner Bevel.
Finish frame as desired.
Resize image as desired - save in .jpg format to share on the internet.

I flood filled the wider border with a dark brown and
used the Eye Candy 3.1 Jitter setting to create the texture.

Hints & Tips

  • If the background is predominately dark, choose a light foreground colour for the frame. Likewise, if the background is light, choose a dark colour for the frame.
  • Try different shaped pictures. A square pic will give a different result to a rectangular one.
  • Select a preset shape to compliment the area you are framing.
  • Experiment with the Kaleidoscope settings.
  • If you feel the background is too dark, keep the background area selected after you have applied the Kaleidoscope effects then add another layer and flood-fill with white or a pale colour to lighten this area. Reduce opacity in the layer palette as desired.
  • Try using white for the foreground colour and then add a SBP preset.
  • Experiment with different texture effects for the outer area.
